Corrugated: Cowl Update & Matching Hat

The Corrugated Cowl was originally shared as a free pattern in November 2013. I’m continuing to work through my older patterns and update them and when I went to look for this file, I was surprised to find I’d drafted a matching hat. I knit myself a hat in the cream-colored alpaca to match my longer cowl and knit a narrower, taller version of the cowl with matching hat for my mom using Lion Brand Mandala Watercolor yarn (shown in pink, a colorway called teaberry). I’ve also cleaned up and updated the patterns and they’re both downloadable here or on the free patterns page (pdf links are buttons at top and bottom of this page, free pattern page linked in menu bar above).

I don’t generally do yarn reviews, but this was my first time using one of the Lion Brand Mandala yarns and I am generally happy with this experience so a few notes on this yarn: This is the Mandala Watercolors yarn in the teaberry colorway. It is both lovely to look at and incredibly soft when knit. The yarn was easy to work with and wasn’t splitty or knot up on me. I do wonder how well the yarn will hold up to wear, because it isn’t tightly wound but for now I would recommend the yarn for soft, lofty accessory knitting. I liked it enough to buy some more of the yarn in the Almond colorway so am excited to use it again.

The Corrugated hat and cowl patterns are intended to be fairly simple, easy-to-follow patterns. Shown below is the alpaca version I’ve made for myself. The hat is available in just one size to fit most adults with a 21-22″ head circumferences and there are two sizes of the cowl. The tall version of the cowl has a 30” circumference and 16” height. The wide version of the cowl has 56” circumference  and 8 ½” height. You can knit either size of cowl with around 350 yards (350 g) of a bulky weight yarn.

The alpaca set is lovely and warm. This is Berry Meadows bulky alpaca. I bought a kit with 520 yards of this yarn a couple of years ago at Rhinebeck. I didn’t love the pattern that came with the kit, but I’m a sucker for a luscious alpaca yarn. This was a good investment and the Corrugated set is a good use of this soft, warm alpaca blend.
