Lincoln Woods Hat: A super bulky knitting pattern

Todays blog post is a bit of a variation on a theme. The theme? It’s super bulky yarns. I normally lean towards knitting with fingering and DK weight yarns, but I’m really enjoying knitting super bulky yarn right now. Today I’m sharing a pattern similar to the Super Simple, Super Bulky Hat shared last week.

This hat is perfect for a weekend hike and is named for an amazing park here in Rhode Island. Lincoln Woods is a gorgeous park that is perfect for a Saturday morning dog walk and this fitted beanie will cover your ears and keep you warm on a cold day.

It’s also a quick knit so would be great for community knitting projects, donations, or gifting. The Lincoln Woods hat knits up quickly and is really attractive when finished.

This is also a good pattern to try out knitting with two colors. While stripes may be the easiest way to explore colorwork, this kind of dotted hat is really accessible.

I like to top these hats with a yarn pompom, but pompoms are optional. Also, if you are not super confident about making your own yarn pompoms, you can grab an inexpensive faux fur pompom and add that.

Pattern Details

Skill level: Beginner-Intermediate
- Skills needed: knitting and purling in the round, knitting with two colors, decreasing by k2tog.
Size: One Size – to fit most adults
- Circumference: 19”, stretches to fit 22” head circumference
- Height: 7 ½”
Gauge: 10 sts and 10 rows per 4” in stockinette stitch knit in the round on larger needles.

Materials:

US 11 (8 mm) 16″ circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Recommended needles: Clover Bamboo 16″ Circular Knitting Needle
US 13 (9 mm) 16″ circular needles and set of double-pointed needles, or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Recommended needles: Boye 16″ Circular Needle and Clover Bamboo 7″ Double-Pointed Needles
MC: 75 yards super bulky weight wool-blend yarn.
- Recommended yarn: Lionbrand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (80% acrlylic, 20% wool). Samples shown in: Glacier
CC: 15 yards super bulky weight wool-blend yarn
- Recommended yarn: Lionbrand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (80% acrlylic, 20% wool). Samples shown in: Fisherman

Abbreviations

CC: contrasting color
CO: cast on
k: knit
k2tog: knit two together
MC: main color
p: purl
rnd(s): round(s)
st(s): stitch(es)

Instructions

Brim

Using MC, CO 48 sts with smaller needles.
Rnd 1: *k1, p1; repeat from * to end of rnd.
Repeat rnd 1 seven times (8 rnds complete)

Body of Hat

Rnd 2: switch to larger needles, knit all sts.
Rnd 3: Add CC, *k1 with MC, k1 with CC; repeat from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 4: knit all sts with MC.
Rnd 5: *k1 with CC, k1 with MC; repeat from * to end of rnd.
Repeat rnds 2-5 twice times (3 repeats total).
Repeat rnd 2 once more.

Crown

Switch to double-pointed needles, or preferred method of knitting a small circumference in the round, when needed.

Rnd 6: *(k1 with MC, k1 with CC) three times, k2tog with MC; repeat from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 7: knit all sts with MC.
Rnd 8: *(k1 with CC, k1 with MC) twice,k1 with CC, k2tog with MC; repeat from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 9: knit all sts with MC.
Rnd 10: *(k1 with MC, k1 with CC) twice, k2tog with MC; repeat from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 11: knit all sts with MC.
Rnd 12: *k1 with CC, k1 with MC, k1 with CC, k2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd.
- Rnd 12 is the last round with the CC; cut CC leaving a 6” tail to weave in.
Rnd 13: Continue with MC, *k2, k2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 14: *k1, k2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 15: k2tog around (6 sts remaining).

Cut yarn and weave tail through remaining stitches. Weave in loose ends. Lightly wet block. Optional: add a pompom to top your hat. Wear.
