Baby Rhode Trip Hat

Free pattern for baby sizes of the Rhode Trip hat.

The Rhode Trip Hat is my favorite basic cabled hat. I wanted to offer a version in baby sizes, and am so pleased to be able to share this pattern is now available in three sizes for little heads. I wanted to avoid offering 6 or more sizes in a single pdf (mostly for ease of readibility and the crown decreases vary between the baby and adult sizes) so the link at the top of this page downloads just the baby sizes. You can find this pattern and the pattern file with the adult sizes on the free patterns page

The Preemie, 0-3 months, and 18 month Rhode Trip Hats

This hat is knit in the round and uses basic cabling and twisted stitches. This is a great project for an adventurous beginner ready to take on a cabled hat or an experienced knitter looking for an easy to remember, quick cabled hat pattern. This pattern is also good for a variety of different worsted weight yarns so while I recommend using a wool or wool-blend yarn, you can really experiment with other yarns and I think you’ll get good results.

My main tip before starting this pattern is to make sure you knit the right size for your intended recipient. The smallest size is a preemie size and is too small to fit an average sized newborn (it will only stretch to fit a 13″ or 13 1/2″ head circumference). If you’re knitting for an average size newborn or young baby, I would use the 3-6 months size. If knitting for a baby over 3-6 months or a young toddler, I would recommend knitting the 18 month old size. You can also modify the pattern to a custom size by adding 12-stitch pattern repeats or 6-round cable repeats (there are notes in the pattern to help you out with this!).

Six samples of the baby Rhode Trip Hat – these are so quick to knit, I had to make some to gift.
