As mentioned last week, I’ve been on a hat-making, stash-busting binge. Fortunately, this binge is going to benefit the students of Armistead Gardens Elementary School, this years recipients of Lovelyarn’s 500 Hats Project.
A couple of days ago, I used some Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick to make two hats. The first hat I made is from a post in the Lovelyarns group on Ravelry of one knitter’s hurricane knitting, appropriately titled the Hurricane Hat (Ravelry). Her post was perfectly timed because this yarn was unearthed when I was going through my stash and I really wasn’t sure what to do with it.
The second hat is basically the same thing with 9×1 ribbing. The ribbed hat doesn’t look like much just sitting there but it is really cute when worn.
The recipe for the bulky hat with ribbing is below the fold.
Materials:
- Under 100 yards of bulky yarn. Sample used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick.
- US15 needles to knit in the round. Note: I used double pointed for the crown increases and then switched to knitting in the round on two long US15 circulars.
Recipe:
- CO 4 sts on one double-pointed needle.
- Increase rounds for crown:
- Round 1: Knit the front and back of each stitch (8 sts. total). At the same time, divide the stitches onto two needles (4 sts per needle)
- Round 2: *k1, p1* around
- Round 3: *k1, m1, p1* around (12 sts)
- Round 4: *k2, m1, p1* around (16 sts). At the same time, divide the stitches onto 4 double pointed needles.
- Round 5: *k3, m1, p1* around (20 sts)
- Round 6: *k4, m1,p1* around (24 sts)
- Round 7: *k5, m1, p1* around (28 sts)
- Round 8: *k6, m1, p1* around (32 sts)
- Round 9: *k7, m1, p1* around (36 sts)
- Round 10: *k8, m1, p1* around (40 sts)
- Round 11:*k9, m1, p1* around (44 sts)
- Body of Hat:
- Round 1: *k9, k1 through the back loop, p1* repeat
- Repeat round 1 until 8 measures 8″ long or to desired length. The hat pictured used 20 rounds.
- Bind off using a stretchy bind-off. I prefer Jenny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-off.
